I had my first turtle rescue of the year today!

(Pleased that I can still possibly move faster than a turtle. Of course I don't know that for sure as he ducked into his shell as I approached.)

*hee* You know about the one we rescued at JRF in the park, right? Dudley is GROWING!

I'll have to watch out as I drive around today to see if I see any in danger!

*HUGS*

I saw a picture of Dudley but I don't think I heard the story.

My rescues don't usually go home with me as it often seems I'm on my way to work. Of course since most of my drive is in the country I just get them across the road and hopefully they go their merry way.

Well, this little fella was almost stepped on at JRF on Thursday as we were starting to lay out the site. He'd literally just been hatched, according to Riley.

I had a clean coffee can in the van so I got it out and Eric and I quickly found flat rocks, some moss and a couple sticks to put in the botton for a habitat for him and put some water in the bottom of it.

Somehow it got put into the care of Riley and then Eric suggested, "Hey Susi, here's your Dudley!" which made me roar. We weren't successful in finding any worms for him as they'd just sprayed the park, so it's also likely that we saved him from starvation!

So Dudley he became and Riley became Papa as we got madly busy with situating vendors. I have to admit that I completely forgot about him but fortunately, Riley took the fostership seriously, took care of him all weekend, took him home and brings both him and "big brother" Petey back and forth to OKRF each weekend.

He's growing! And we get to have a small plastic container of worms in the refrigerator each weekend....fortunately very clearly marked and with a good solid lid on it!

Turtle rescue is what I call it....basically when I see a turtle in the middle of the road I stop and get him across the road so he doesn't get squished. (I always leave them going the way they were....after they must be on their way somewhere.)

I do it too. (Though I always get nervous when they are snapping turtles!)

My first wildlife rescue of the year was a little bird who had about half of his adult feathers grown in. Sasha found the bird first, and pawed at it, possibly breaking a couple of the wing feathers, but otherwise not hurting the bird. I tucked the bird into my neighbor's backyard, nestled in some ivy underneath a tree. A few hours later, the neighbor was in his yard, so I told him about it, and he said the bird was still there, alive and bright-eyed. Dunno what happened to it after that, but there wasn't much else we could do...no clue where it came from, as all the nearby trees were still small enough to note that none of them had nests. :(

I hope the little guy made it.

Me too. I've made myself a note to look into getting some droppers though...I know what to do with abandoned mammals, but not a clue what to feed a baby bird. Connor took a stab at hunting for some worms, at least, heh.

My aunt has always had really good luck with baby birds and feeds them some concoction she makes that includes a bit of small birdseed and egg yolk -- mixed as a kind of paste. I don't know what else is in it, but she almost force-feeds them if necessary.

You can feed baby birds wet puppy food. They do pretty well with it.

Yay you! I always place them down with stern warnings about cars and people. Don't know if they listen, but it makes me feel better. ;)

I'll have to start giving them a stern talking to as well. (I'm usually too preoccupied making sure *I* don't get myself run over as well.)
